Bosch Releases Virtual Garage

March 19, 2016

Robert Bosch, LLC is officially launching the 2D version of the Bosch Virtual Garage. The Bosch Virtual Garage was initially launched as a 3D version during the 2015 BoschXperience tour, using Oculus Rift DK2 goggles. The feedback from participants was very positive and many asked if they would be able to participate in the program again. Unfortunately, delivering 3D content requires a powerful gaming computer, robust internet and access to 3D goggles, so we decided to develop the same program in a 2D world. The 2D Virtual Garage can be found at  https://aviondemand.com/bosch-training/virtual-garage/

The Bosch Virtual Garage is a program that tests your skills on a virtual car, using common diagnostic tools found in an average repair shop. The diagnostic and repair process is similar to what you do in the shop every day and you will have a virtual assistant called Dyno that will explain how to navigate the virtual garage and assist in repairing the vehicle.

You will be working on a non-brand specific 2.5 liter Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, with bank to bank fuel control and a variety of driveability issues. Once Dyno completes the initial instructions, you are in charge of the diagnostic process. You can select specific parts on the schematic board, review the diagnostic data associated with that part and decide if that part is the source of the fault. Once you think you know what is wrong with the vehicle, you will open the parts department and select the replacement part. Once Dyno replaces the part, you can take a virtual road test and determine if the vehicle is repaired.

Your skills are measured using a real time clock that begins when you test your first part and stops once the vehicle is repaired. In addition to the real time clock, each part tested and replaced increases the total time. For example, if you decide to test the oxygen sensor the time clock will jump 20 minutes, if you decide to replace a specific part, the time clock will increase based on an average replacement time. The ultimate goal is repairing the vehicle efficiently and accurately the first time around. Once the vehicle is repaired you will be able to compare your completion time to a recommended standard. Keep in mind fastest is not always the most accurate.

Bob Pattengale, Training Manager for Bosch says the Bosch Virtual Garage was created to help technicians determine if their diagnostic process is solid or where they might need some additional training. Technicians will also be exposed to a variety of diagnostic tools and test processes, which may not be familiar to all technicians. For example, a labscope is used to test some of the parts, so an understanding of waveform analysis is important. If you don’t currently use a labscope, you will learn when and where a labscope should be used to help diagnose a specific part. You will also be exposed to the 4-step fuel trim diagnostic process, which is an excellent way to analyze and baseline vehicle faults, with and without DTCs. The fuel trim data can also be used to narrow down the parts that might be at fault on the vehicle.

To participate in Bosch Virtual Garage, you will need to first create a free account on aviondemand.com. If you already have an account, log in using your username (email address) and password. Navigate to the Bosch tab on the top right side of your screen and select Virtual Garage in the menu on your left side. Here you will find Fault One.
