The Upcoming SEMA Show in Las Vegas

March 30, 2015

THE UPCOMING SEMA SHOW

As we end the month of October, the automotive industry has its eyes locked in on the big annual conventions set for the scene of Las Vegas. SEMA will once again be at the forefront as the biggest show going. Did you know SEMA puts on the largest annual show of small businesses in the country? More facts about SEMA that even the biggest enthusiasts might not know: *SEMA’s first show was held under the grandstands at Dodger Stadium nearly half a century ago. The show moved to Anaheim, and eventually Las Vegas back in 1977. *SEMA used to stand for Speed Equipment Manufacturer’s Association. The roots were, and still are in motor sports. As SEMA has grown, the business has broadened to include much more.

imgres-1As the annual show expands, there are strategic features that have been identified for continued success. New products and exhibitors are the backbone of this trade association, and SEMA says there will be upwards of 3,000 products on display this time around. That number is more than they’ve ever previously had. However– as the show grows in popularity, as well as the number of products and exhibitors, there is a focus on quality as much as quantity. Peter MacGillivray is the SEMA Vice President of Events and Communications, so his plate is obviously extremely full right now.   But he did take time to speak with us at AVI, and he was steadfast in the “quality over quantity” philosophy. MacGillivray told us SEMA accomplishes this goal in a number of ways. Among them, is showcasing the products in the best way possible. For example, at the Vegas show, exhibitors can be easily located; there is a convenience factor SEMA strives for in this regard. SEMA also identifies the most important and valuable assets to the stakeholders, which, in turn, drives the interest of the buyers attending the show. MacGillivray also told us that everyone is required to apply to attend the show, including vendors. They can’t just show up and plop products down on a table. Priorities like those are part of the way SEMA balances trying to be the biggest, as well as the best.

The annual show take place from November 3rd through the 6th, culminating with the SEMA Cruise. This part of the event is a parade of vehicles leaving the show, and it promises to be quite the display. In addition, when the show is completed, there will be what’s known as “SEMA Ignited”, which is an after-party held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. And for those who don’t have the opportunity to attend the SEMA show, cars will be parked on exhibit to see afterward. It’s coming fast– with power, style, and tradition. See you in the desert in early November.
