Tech Tip: Ford Spark Plug Removal

April 12, 2015

Ford vehicles equipped with the 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L 3-valve engines have spark plugs that are difficult to remove as noted in TSB 08-7-6. This Tech Tip follows the general procedure of the TSB in question along with helpful tips from our master certified technician. Even after utilizing all proper precautions to avoid breaking a plug, you can still likely come up short with a broken plug.

Breaking a plug off can be just as frustrating as breaking a bolt where the only thing that remains is the threaded area inside the head and nothing to grab onto to twist out counter-clockwise. To quickly overcome this obstacle, our master technician chose to use a versatile Ford plug removal kit from Lisle. This removal kit includes all you need to lock onto a broken plug in order to twist it out of the threads to avoid hours of extra work taking the head apart and damaging the threads in the head.
