To scan a car, gather the scanner, wireless smart link, and cable. Connect the cable firmly to the car’s diagnostic connector. Ensure the car is powered on for the PCM to communicate. Launch the scan tool, select “diagnose,” and use “auto detect” to identify the vehicle. Some vehicles may require additional information beyond the VIN.
Once detected, choose “diagnostics” to load protocols and modules. Select “16 pin connector” for North American vehicles. Verify the vehicle ID and proceed. The tool will load data PIDs, active commands, and special tests.
To diagnose, select “Health Report” to check every module for DTCs. Green modules are functional, grayed-out ones are unequipped, and red ones have DTCs. A report can be generated, saved, or emailed to the customer.
To view or clear DTCs from a specific module, tap on the red module. Use “Code Assist” or “X431 fix” for information. To clear codes, select “clear DTCs.” Note that clearing codes from one module doesn’t affect others.
To access data streams or special functions for a module (e.g., ECM), select it. For data stream, the tool offers a search function to quickly find parameters like “engine speed” among hundreds of options. This process quickly connects to a vehicle, retrieves data, and clears codes. Other features of the scan tool will be covered separately.
