Launch Training-Connect Scan Tool X-431 Throttle III

Okay, we’re ready to scan a car.

Three things we’re going to need.

We need the scanner itself.

We’re going to need the wireless smart link right here.

And, of course, the cable.

The cable hooks directly to the car.

This is going to be in the car.

Obviously, the scan tool can be anywhere around here.

It’s a wireless scan tool so no wires needed as far as that goes.

We’ve got the battery charged up. We’re good to go.

Now, when you go ahead and hook up here, make sure that you engage

this all the way in so it stays firmly in place.

Okay?

We don’t want a situation where we put it in the vehicle,

kick it with a foot or something, and it goes ahead and unplugs.

So what we’re ready to do now is just get in the vehicle and throw this in there

and then we’ll be right back up front here. Here we go.

Okay.

We’re going to go ahead and hook our smart link up to

the diagnostic connector on the vehicle, which happens to be right over here.

So here we go.

Okay.

Now, if you’ll notice, as we hook up the connector, we’re going to start

getting a blue glow over here in just a

minute, is going to go through a self-check

and we’re going to get a little bit of a beeping noise,

which signifies that everything’s good and ready to go.

Okay, all set.

We’re going to put it on the seat.

Close the door.

Okay. We have the smart link all hooked up.

Remember, the car has to be powered up.

At this point in time.

The PCM has to be able to communicate.

It has to be alive. We’re ready to go.

Okay.

We’re ready to go with our scan tool.

So, hey, first thing we’re going to do, it’s up at the opening screen.

I’m going to go ahead and press the button on the touch screen

X 431 and it’s going to go ahead and launch the scan tool.

Scan tool is going to launch.

And if you notice, we’ve got a menu ahead of us now

and we’re going to go to diagnose because we want to diagnose this vehicle.

Now, we’ve got a lot of other places we can go, but diagnose is where

we’re at here.

So tap on diagnose, I’m going to go to auto detect now.

I can go ahead and pick whatever vehicle it is manually also.

But auto detect is the quickest way the scan tool itself is going to go ahead

and read the VIN and then identify what kind of vehicle it is.

Now, keep in mind,

some vehicles are going to identify totally from the VIN, other vehicles.

They might ask you a few questions as far as the scan tool goes

and might ask you, like, does it have ABS brakes, does have a digital dash?

What does it have option wise in some cases, because that may not be

identifiable, on some of the factory VINs.

Just keep that in mind.

So we’re all set right now asks if this were a Toyota or a Toyota EV

apparently there’s no change in that, Vin So here we go and we’re good to go.

Now we can diagnose, we can look at scan history.

So we’ve hooked up to this vehicle before we can have a record of that vehicle,

which is nice.

We can go to Quick Access,

which gets us a bunch of information quickly, but we’re going to treat this

like it’s a brand new vehicle just came in.

So we’re going to go ahead and hit diagnostics in this particular case,

what we’re going to do at this point is the scan tool is going to load

all the diagnostic protocols and information,

all the modules this vehicle could possibly have on it and such.

So there’s a lot of information that’s being disseminated

in the background at this particular point, getting us ready to go.

So we’re all set here.

It’s going to ask us what pin are we using the scan tool is set up

to work on vehicles that aren’t domestic American production either.

So you might have some options like 17 pin, 20 pin, whatever.

We’ve got a 16 pin connector here.

So we’re going to pick 16 pin connector.

It’s going to load the specific information for the 16 pin connector.

It tells us the vehicle ID as far as the VIN

North American, it’s a Highlander, it’s a 2022.

It’s got three miles on it.

So it’s basically a brand new vehicle.

So there’s all of our information.

We’re good to go.

We’re going to verify.

That’s all correct. We’re going hit. Okay.

And then basically we’re going to hit okay again.

And here we go.

Now, what we’re doing at this point is loading things like the data

PIDS, the active commands, all the specialty tests that we may

go ahead and do.

So that’s going to get us ready to go in just a minute here.

It could take a little while to load here.

It’s a very speedy processor where there’s a lot of information being loaded,

but it’s very quick.

So if we take a look at it, we’re 56% right now.

And loading.

There we go.

Okay.

So what we’ve got here is every single computer that’s on

any data bus on this vehicle that’s hooked up to the 16 pin connector.

If you notice, there’s quite a few of them up here.

We’ve got different ones and different connectors like we have high speed

CAN one high speed CAN two maybe medium speed CAN link bus connectors, whatever.

So we’re going to do is we’re going to check the whole vehicle in one swift shot

and we’re going to go ahead and pick Health Report right over here.

It’s the best way to diagnose the vehicle you haven’t seen.

So what I’m going to do here is click on Health Report.

And when I click on Health Report, what’s going to happen is the scan

tool is going to communicate

with every single one of these modules located on this vehicle.

And it’s going to tell us very simply if the module is there or is it working

correctly and does it have any DTCs in it.

So we’re going to pull DTC

check on every single module in this vehicle as it’s going through it.

If you notice this one up here, the TPMs is in green.

That means it’s working as it should.

The FS is not equipped on this vehicle.

That’s why it’s great.

We have a situation where the computer right over here

basically has 2 DTCs in it.

So the grayed out ones are ones that this vehicles isn’t equipped with.

The ones that are green means were solid.

No issues with those particular modules.

So so far we’ve got three modules make that four modules that have DTCs in them.

OK the

rest of them so far look fairly clean.

Oh, there’s another one.

We’ve got some ABS trouble codes also.

So this is a way for us to go ahead and get all the information we need

on this vehicle so we have a complete state of health

for our boss, the customer in this case,

to go ahead and present to them what’s wrong with their vehicle.

So currently, what’s wrong.

Now… There’s a few different things we can do.

We can go out here at this point and do a report which identifies the vehicle.

If you notice right here, I’m going to go ahead and hit OK.

We can put all the information in there.

Now, if we filled our shop name and such, it will automatically populate.

And then we are going to go ahead and look at the vehicle report.

You can see the vehicle report.

This is printable or email able, just so you know.

So here’s all the items that had an issue on this particular vehicle

and all the items that are good on this particular vehicle.

So it goes through every single computer module.

It lets us know what the DTCs are.

It also goes ahead and lets us know exactly what’s going on

with each of these modules.

Now, the nice thing about this is after you get the vehicle fixed,

you go ahead to do this test.

You notice it didn’t take much time again and show a clean bill of health

on this particular test.

So it’s a good way to share with the customer.

If we want to, we could share it.

We could save it, etc..

So there’s a lot of different things we can do with the report.

So let’s go back here now.

Let’s say we have a scenario where

maybe we have a code that we want to go ahead and deal with.

In this particular case, if you notice, the module

that’s got the most codes appears to be, well, let’s take a look at it real quick.

We got to we got one, we got two, two, there’s one, etc..

So if we wanted to, let’s get a look at the abs.

If we want to know what kind of trouble codes we had and such, all we have to do,

of course, is hit the computer that’s in red with the number on it.

There’s our trouble codes right over there.

No matter how many it has.

One, two, three, four, 12. Doesn’t matter.

There’s all the trouble codes.

We can go ahead and look online for code assist.

This tells some information about what set the code.

Or we can go to X 431 fix, which is a complete database

on this particular vehicle through motor and it’ll go ahead and give us tips

and such on the codes.

Also, we’re not going to go there right now, but we’ve got the codes.

If we take a look at it, we can clear DTCs very quickly too.

I wanna show you how to clear them.

Obviously you wouldn’t just clear them, but if we got to the point

where we had a clear them,

let me show you how quick and easy that is just to touch the clear DTCs

and basically it’s going to go ahead and take care of the situation for us.

Okay.

So pretty simple.

It’s going to go through and clear the DTCs.

So if you notice, the DTCs in that module now are gone, it’s now green.

Now, the nice thing about this particular scan tool is if you take a look at it,

the other modules

that I did not clear codes from, basically the codes are still there.

Okay.

So you can select which module you want to clear codes on

or you go ahead and clear the DTCs from all the modules.

So it works out kind of Well. Now a couple of things.

Just so you know, if we wanted to, for instance, look at the ECM

and look at data stream, all we have to do in this particular case is find out

where the ECM is located in this case and we would go ahead and pick it.

So let’s go ahead and do something just a little different here.

Let’s go ahead and go to good old ECM right over here.

And we highlight the ECM notice.

There’s no codes in the ECM, But if I wanted to look

at data stream and such, all I have to do is hit enter.

When I hit enter, of course.

Here we go.

Here’s the data stream and all the things you can do.

So we’ve got things like actuation tests.

So these are things

that we can turn on and off and such as far as this particular vehicle goes.

So if you notice, we can do everything from control

injector volume to control the voltage on the alternator, etc..

So there’s a whole host of different things you can do here.

If I want to go back from there,

all I do is hit the key back and there’s also special functions.

Take a look at special functions.

And if you notice, we have a situation here

where we can go ahead and do things like reset the oil service, light, etc.

And then if we want to look at data stream read data stream,

pretty self-explanatory, it’s going to load all the data stream.

Now, you might be a little surprised

when you see how much data stream this Toyota has in it.

Remember, it’s a newer vehicle

and there’s a couple of neat things about this scan tool that go ahead

and go along with the data stream and we’ll point those out.

Right now, if you take a look at it, we have 410

data stream parameters on this vehicle.

Now, in the old days with our scan tools we had to scroll through and find the one

we wanted.

The very, very nice thing about this tool is you can go right over here

and the for instance, I’m just going to hit

search

and I’m going to look at engine and I’m going to type in engine speed.

I’m looking for an engine speed sense.

Okay, So ENG I N E

and if I want, I can go ahead and put S in there for speed.

Notice it took me automatically to what engine speed

so you don’t have to go through and do a bunch of scroll.

All you type do is type in the parameter, search it and there you go.

Here’s all of our engine speed information per cylinder here.

So it’s pretty slick.

Okay.

Just reviewing what we’ve done so far, we went ahead and got our components out.

We’ve hooked up to the car.

We went ahead and programed the scan tool to work on that car, and we’ve went ahead

and looked at trouble codes and how to clear those codes.

There’s other programs that we’re going to be going through

that go through the rest of what this scan tool does.

We just wanted to show you real quickly how quick and easy it is

to go ahead and hook up to a vehicle and get data and information.
