Small particles of the tungsten filament break away and deposit themselves onto the inside of the bulb, darkening the inside of the glass.
Additionally, these particles will burn off and turn into a gas. The gas molecules from the burnt tungsten will combine with the gas molecules of the original fill mixture, further reducing light output.
