Jerry Stewart, AVI’s curriculum administrator and Highlands College instructor, discusses the
F-150 Explorer Hybrid’s single three-phase attraction motor. Technicians need to test its three phases (U, V, W). This involves using a milliohm meter to ensure phase resistance varies no more than 5%, and potentially an oscilloscope with an isolator adapter for voltage analysis, as most scopes can’t directly connect to high-voltage motors. A megaohmmeter is needed to check for phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground shorting and insulation. Live testing also requires pre-use inspection of safety gloves.
