Diesel Maintenance Opportunities – Tech Tip

Hi. I’m Matt Buca from AVI here with a tech tip on diesel fuel systems. So customer complaint could be lack of power, smoke, noise. Okay.

It could relate to a lot of different things on a diesel engine. Okay. Don’t forget about fuel quality. You know, fuel quality is where it all starts.

Diesel engines rely on fuel quality to run correctly. So if I have low cetane fuel, if I have the wrong type of fuel, either d one instead of d two, or or if I got contaminated fuel. All those things are gonna affect the way it runs. So before you start spending a lot of time on diagnostics and get your scan tool out, to spend a lot of time to work, you’re not gonna find a problem or you’re gonna misdiagnose it.

Test your fuel first. So a good fuel test is the first thing you wanna do, and don’t forget about compression on this engine either because compression’s my ignition. You’ll find most of your problems by testing those two things.

So I’m Matt Boot with ABI. That’s your tech tip for today.

Matt Buca from AVI offers a tech tip on diesel fuel systems. When troubleshooting complaints like lack of power, smoke, or noise in a diesel engine, remember that these issues can stem from various sources.

Crucially, do not overlook fuel quality. It’s the foundation of proper diesel engine operation. If the fuel has a low cetane rating, is the wrong type (e.g., D1 instead of D2), or is contaminated, it will negatively impact engine performance.

Before dedicating significant time to scan tool diagnostics, test your fuel first. Misdiagnosis is common when fuel quality is the underlying problem.

Additionally, always consider engine compression. Compression is vital for ignition in a diesel engine. By testing both fuel quality and compression, you’ll often identify the root cause of most problems.

This has been Matt Buca with an AVI tech tip.
