Graphing the rear O2 sensor can be a very useful approach to determine if the problem is in the engine or another area. Transmission shops love this technique to rule out an engine problem. Graph the rear O2 sensor and put the car in the condition that the problem occurs. If the rear O2 sensor voltage goes up it usually indicates a misfire. If the voltage drops it usually indicates a lean condition such as a restricted fuel filter or failing fuel pump.
